Murray remains unbeaten but misses out on World title

A disappointing night in Germany for St Helens’ Martin Murray, who came agonisingly close to the WBA middleweight title with a draw against Felix Sturm.

Murray’s been preparing this season at our Wigan clinic and Rob Harris was in his corner in Mannheim.

All the signs ahead of the bout were good after Murray was crowned British middleweight champion and in doing so extended his unbeaten record to 23 fights.

The Ricky Hatton-trained boxer dominated the middle rounds in Germany, but Sturm fought back at the end. After 12 rounds it came down to the judges with one marking it 116-112 to Sturm, another 115-113 to Murray and the third 114-114.

The draw means that while Murray retains his unbeaten record, the title stays with Sturm.
