At the 2016 Olympics Prep Camp with Team GB

Posted on August 11th, 2016
The athletes who are all competing for the podium right now in Rio, trained in locations specifically chosen to enhance everyone’s abilities. This year Harris & Ross’ senior physio, Hannah Griffiths and massage therapist, Becky Ellis were both supporting the endurance runners readying them for the competition of a life time, the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Within the French Pyrenees mountains is the location of Team GB’s Olympic Athletic Prep camp, Font Romeu. A French village with the most beautiful nature trails, fully equipped with a track and gym facilities, situated 1800 metres above sea level. The altitude helps to stimulate the athletes’ bodies to generate more red blood cells, in order to carry more oxygen to their muscles, which will in turn improve their performance by enabling them to run faster.

Hannah’s and Becky’s skills were called upon to help prepare the athletes, before they made the journey to Brazil. Both were responsible with helping the lead endurance physio, ensuring the runners were 100% ready going in to the Championships. Whether a runner was preparing to compete in an 800m race or a marathon, our staff were there to help them achieve their dream.

The day would start with a morning monitoring session for the athletes. Here they would check in with the physiologist and then the physio for any taping, or maybe a little treatment if they have any niggles. The medical team would then go to the track for any training sessions that were on that morning, to watch and provide physio input where needed.

After lunch, some athletes would get a post session flush or a targeted deeper massage, eliminating any muscular tightness or joint stiffness as-well as to aid recovery and promote relaxation.

The working day would end with a medical team meeting, those present included the sports doctor and physiologist. This was an opportunity for the medical team to go through each athlete and raise any issues that required further management the following day. The day ended with a staff run in the hills and a steak dinner, with the odd glass of wine.

As the Olympics approached, a few athletes at a time were flown over to Rio, and it wasn’t long before Hannah and Becky’s time in Font came to an end.
