Challenge Yourself with Uswim Openwater

Posted on March 15th, 2016

Specialist nurse by day, ardent open water swimmer by night (and weekends), Karen Smith works with her partner Dave Quartermain who set up Uswim Openwater back in 2007. Swimming in the docks in Salford or a serene lake in the country, whether it’s raining or the sunshine is beaming down, you will find Uswim swimmers in most weather conditions.

Karen is not one to shy away from massive challenges, with some help from Harris & Ross Director, Rob Harris, she was able to complete the Loch Ness challenge and the English Channel!

To get an idea of what to expect, here is a little taste of their February Polar Swim event:

What a way to start a sunny Saturday. The sun was indeed shining but the water temperature was a biting 5.4 degrees, however it didn’t stop over 70 swimmers from having their leisurely swim around Dock 9 Salford Quays.
Swimmers also took part in a clinical trial of the product Earol (invisible earplug). For swimmers suffering from trapped water in their ears or recurring ear infections and dizziness, this product has a great success rate so it is nice to support a trial of this kind.
There was music, a roaring fire, hot chocolate and Karen’s blueberry muffins which was the perfect reward after the challenging water temperature. Half wore just swim suits and half wrapped up with their wetsuit, gloves, socks and hats, but were all wearing a beaming smile at the end.
