Darren Roberts’ Australian TourPosted on November 30th, 2015
High Performance Manager, Darren Roberts gained another stamp on his passport, when he jetted to Australia to present a conference for ASCA.
I was very honoured to be asked to present at the Australian Strength & Conditioning Association National Conference in November, on the Gold Coast near Brisbane. It was fantastic for such a prestigious organisation to recognise the challenges our athletes face and the work we do with them. The flight to Australia never gets any shorter, having done this trip a number of times to work with different athletes over there. An 8 hour flight to Abu Dhabi followed by a 14 hour flight straight to Brisbane! No one felt too sorry for me though, as the Gold Coast is an incredible place to be, the conference venue was an amazing hotel just minutes from the beach.
My presentation was titled ‘Extreme Sports Athletes – Managing The Un-Manageable’. It was an amazing conference, and humbling to present alongside world class practitioners from around the globe on different areas of performance. I met loads of people who I’ve only read about – exchanging ideas with them was invaluable.
Once the conference was over, I flew down to Port Adelaide to spend the first two days of Port Adelaide Football Club pre-season with them. The Head of Performance is a friend of mine and it was another amazing experience to see how Aussie rules football teams prepare and manage the athletes. I also did a talk to the whole performance staff on high performance management, and our medical management model – sharing ideas and experiences with practitioners is vital for ongoing professional development. The team and staff made me feel totally welcome and part of the team while I was there. All of them wanting to make a CPD trip to us and see the work I do here in Wilmslow.
From Adelaide I flew back to Brisbane for the final leg of the trip – which was presenting at the Junior Sports Science Symposium. This was aimed at working with young athletes, which we work with a number of – and how we steer them and nurture them as athletes. I was lucky to be presenting alongside some real world class practitioners based in Australia, and again it was a strange experience to meet people from the other side of world, who know all about my work with action sports. The symposium organiser had set me up in an amazing apartment right in downtown Brisbane, a great city which was huge fun.
Soon enough though it was time to head home after a packed schedule, and make the marathon flight back to Manchester, of course it was pouring down when I landed! I met some great people, made amazing new connections with lots of people expressing amazement at the things we do with the athletes. A great trip all round.
