From Broken Man to IRONMANPosted on June 12th, 2017
Four years ago, Rhys Jones fell from a wall while out walking his dog and broke every metatarsal in his foot. He was told by his surgeon he would never be able to run again, which for some would have meant adjusting their lives and changing some well engrained habits. But not for Rhys…
Despite the surgeon giving you the life changing news, you were certain you would overcome this and went down the path of rehabilitation with Harris & Ross. And so, since your accident you’ve conquered a few challenges, including IRONMAN Mallorca recently; was it through sheer determination to prove your surgeon wrong, which motivated you on in each challenge?
Initially I started running for that reason with Tough Mudder as my target. However it was Rob [Harris] who put the idea of a triathlon in my mind, and every time I moved up a distance he pushed me for the next level. He was the one that persuaded me to do the IRONMAN 70.3 in Mallorca, rather than UK.
How has the treatment and our practitioners helped you in your recovery?
I struggled, but once I started working with Rob, he was a God send. Most of my injuries were connected to my back and nerve related but appeared localised, so the treatment I had in the past hadn’t worked. However with the hands on treatment, physio routines given to me and the coaching schedule on how to train through the issues, I’ve gotten to where I am now.
What have you learnt about yourself, since you first started coming to Harris & Ross?
I can do endurance events. I had never been a distance person and when I moved up in distance, I always got injured so Harris & Ross not only helped with my injuries, they also educated me on injury prevention.
What’s next for you?
Hopefully the full IRONMAN, if my body holds together
Best of luck to you Rhys, keep on defying the doctor’s expectations and smashing those goals!
