James Dunn HM Plant KTM UK Motorcross Part One – Recovery

Posted on July 28th, 2014

Where to start with Dunny?

James “Dunny” Dunn is a 19 year old motocross rider who is a part of the HM Plant KTM UK team riding in the Maxxis British Motocross Championships in the MX2 class. Dunny first got his first bike when he was 4 years old and at the tender age 7 took part in his first race. Fast forward to present day and Dunny has progressed his through the ranks to be racing with one of the bigger teams on the circuit.

dunny_hospitalSo how do we know Dunny? Well, motocross is not without its injuries and unfortunately, last year was one of those years, as he came off his bike and broke both heels and one ankle in the same crash.

That’s when he first met Harris & Ross. He headed for our High Performance Manager, Darren Roberts for some advice and as soon as the casts were removed, he started work with the High Performance Team’s Clinical Director, Doug Jones.

After a great start to the 2014 British season, Dunny turned up to Round 4 at Canada Heights ready for more racing. But disaster struck. On a left-hand turn, the front wheel washed out from under the bike. With his leg outstretched, the handle bars went into his knee and heel into the floor. All of this left him with a dislocated knee.

After the race and the subsequent trip to hospital, Dunny wanted a second opinion from a knee specialist. As it transpires this was a good move.

dunny_kneeDunny came up to Manchester and was seen by Professor Phil Turner who advised that he needed to have some surgery to repair the vascular damage caused to the knee. He got an external fixator attached to his leg for 5 weeks, before heading back to Manchester to get it removed.

This is where the High Performance Team stepped up a gear. The initial post-op triage was carried out by Doug and Laura Robson, to assess his curent condition and how best to move the treatment forward. They also consulted with Professor Turner, who asked the team to make every effort to get as much movement, function and strength back into the leg before he underwent the first operation to repair the ligament damage to the knee.

Dunny would travel up to Wilmslow to stay with the team Tuesday-Friday every week. While this might seem a little excessive in terms of the intensity of treatment, it is far from it. He’s in the fortunate position of being seen and treated very quickly, but in order to make the best recovery possible, as much function as possible must be returned before starting to fix the ligaments. This is to try and future-proof the joint post-surgery as well as restore the full range of motion.

Here’s a typical day:

As you can see, this is a pretty full schedule that involves a lot of hard work and being in pretty uncomfortable positions for Dunny. However, he knows that the harder he works now, the higher the chance of a faster and complete recovery from the injury. The above will expand to include pool sessions and hydrotherapy as soon the wounds on his leg have healed up.

For a very brief view of some of the hard work Dunny is doing you can check out the Harris & Ross Instagram account. We will also be adding longer edits to the YouTube channel.
