John Callaghan – Australia to the UKPosted on February 16th, 2015
Having travelled over to the UK from Australia late last year, I’ve found that 9 times out of 10, each time I say “G’day” to a new patient, I’m met with two questions…
“Ooo, is that an accent I hear?! Where are you from?”
*Stunned look on patient’s face*…
“What are you doing here in the middle of our winter?” or, “Didn’t you see the weather report before you came over” or, “Are you mad!?”
And, to be honest, before I started with Harris and Ross, I found it challenging to put together a good answer. Here I was in Manchester, for the second half of a European gap year, at the wrong end of my first long, cold UK winter. Now before you consider me a spoilt Aussie whinging about the weather, you have to realise I’d just come off the back of a brilliant summer which had me doing things like living in a 13th century monastery in Tuscany, trying my hand at olive farming in the south of France, hiking through Bulgarian mountain ranges and island hopping through Croatia to name a few. So it was always going to be a hard act to follow…
So, what was I doing here that I couldn’t be doing in Australia? Was the scope for Physiotherapy work really that different from back home? Well, it depends I guess. Very fortunately for me, I found Harris and Ross Perform. After coming in and seeing the facilities at the Wilmslow Clinic and chatting with the team, I knew straight away this would be worth sticking around for.
I don’t know of any other practices back home who have its team members involved (at an elite level) across so many different sports. Part of this is due to Harris and Ross’ impressive background in providing Physiotherapy for elite sports in the UK. Another part can be attributed to their High Performance Team taking advantage of their proximity with the rest of Europe. I’ve learnt it’s just as likely for my next patient coming through the doors to be the European 250 Champion Motocrosser as it is to be a father of 2 working in IT from Bramhall.
So far, I’ve come across professional athletes from Rugby League (or football as us Aussies call it), Soccer (or football as you Brits call it), Motocross, Snowboarding, Skiing, Down Hill Mountain Biking and Squash (he was from Egypt actually!). Just last weekend we were at the Hawkstone International Motocross providing Physiotherapy to the riders before their race.
So, don’t get me wrong – Australia’s Physiotherapy scene is top notch, but the connectivity with the rest of Europe and the programs at Harris and Ross Perform have allowed me to gain a whole new bag of experiences. The other nice thing is that we’re treating world class athletes with the same facilities as the general public. All the same facilities are at our fingertips if and when they are needed. So even when the next patient is not a World Champion Athlete, it’s still a great environment to be in – whether you’re the therapist or the patient!
