NYD Uswim Creates Almighty Splash!

Posted on January 11th, 2016

The only thing on everyone’s mind on New Year’s Day is to lounge around, overcome hangovers and feel sorry for themselves for whatever antics they got up to the previous night; however, 250 people were ready and raring to go swimming in the docks at Salford Quays.

Harris & Ross patient, Karen Smith, Uswim Openwater Team Leader tells us about the day:

Brilliant. Inspiring. Courageous! That just about describes the 250 dynamic dippers, young and older, who took part in Uswim’s big charity event, the biggest attendance for an NYD swim for four years; more than 20 of them being under the age of 16. The air temperature was around 3 degrees and the water 8.4 degrees making it almost perfect conditions for such a dip. Swimmers had the choice of Dip or Dive and had a 250 metre course marked out with huge iceberg buoys to explore.  The swim raised over £2,320 for the Christie’s Teenage Cancer Unit with people also providing food to the local Salford Central Foodbank. All in all a brilliant event well publicised on Radio 2, BBC Radio Manchester, Twitter and Facebook. Cheers!

“A huge thank you to Uswim and all the swimmers at yesterday’s New Year’s Day Charity Dip. Your support will make a huge difference to our young patients” The Christie.

“Thanks again for supporting us on New Year’s Day. The total weight of food donated was 248.95kg which is a great boost to our supplies! In 2015, we feed over 3200 including 1375 children and all donations will be used to help support local people in crisis”, Mark Whittington, Salford Central Foodbank

Brave souls!
