Phil Hoyland Conquers The Channel

Uswim met a very special man nearly 2 years ago. He approached the team with the goal of swimming the English Channel. His name is Phil Hoyland.

Phil has been committed and dedicated to the tough, challenging training schedule that is necessary to be in tip top condition to take on this huge task.

Phil first swam the English Channel with Uswim’s very own Karen Smith in their Dover Souls Relay Team last August, in a fabulous 14 hours and 8 minutes.  This was a tough swim leaving him to reflect on the solo attempt he had booked. He endured a thunderstorm and bolts of lightning on his last leg and temporarily doubted the solo attempt. But this was a small bump in the road, as when Phil returned from the Dover Souls, he felt driven to get started on his training for the Channel Swim, with the ambition of landing in France as his ultimate goal.

Since then, he has taken on a one-way Windermere, swam overnight for 8 and half hours covering 16 miles and as final preparation took on a two-way Ullswater swim, which was 13-15° along the way.  A choppy wild swim to say the least, but Phil walked out of that swim knowing he could conquer the English Channel.

To help with his training, Phil was seen by Harris & Ross’, Senior Physio, Fiona Lundie who gave him regular sessions to ensure he was in the best possible condition to smash the channel; the treatment he received was a key part of Phil’s preparation.

On Tuesday morning 26th July at 0228, Phil Hoyland swam the English Channel escorted by best friend Andy Coles, Uswim’s David Quartermain and Karen Smith. It was a fantastic 12 hours and 24 minutes before he stood up on the French Beach.  Phil was strong throughout and his team never doubted his success.  What an amazing swim in memory of his Dad and to raise money for Dementia UK.
