Running Achilles Tendon Injuries

In our monthly series of articles for we turn to achilles tendon injuries. With the days getting longer and competitions piling up, this is the time that training increases – and so do the chances of injury.

We see achilles tendon injuries quite regularly at this time of year and while it’s one of the most common, it’s potentially one of the most dangerous – in terms of missing training and events.

In this month’s article Jeff Ross looks not only at the symptoms, but also treatment, rehabilitation and getting back into training.

The most important thing to do is get seen to as quickly as you can, the earlier you get into your GP or physio clinic, the better.

The keys to successful rehab of Achilles tendinopathy are: early diagnosis; treatment to prevent additional collagen damage; an eccentric strengthening programme; the correction of predisposing factors such as muscle tightness and abnormal biomechanics; and appropriate progression to functional activities and sports specific rehabilitation.
