Tom Burden at the 2017 Maccabiah GamesPosted on July 13th, 2017
Not only is Tom Burden our Massage Therapist, but he’s also a professional athlete too. He is part of the Israeli National Rugby Union team and has had the chance to play in one of the most significant events – The 2017 Maccabiah Games! Causing much jealousy, Tom has sent over his account of his time in Israel…
As well as treating elite athletes, for the past three years, I have had the opportunity to experience playing sport at an international level. I currently play Rugby Union for the Israeli National, and this week it’s the start of the 20th Maccabiah Games!
The Maccabiah Games is often referred to as the ‘Jewish Olympics’, first held in 1932, the Games are an international Jewish and Israeli multi-sport event held every four years here in Israel. It is the third largest sporting event in the work, with 10,000 athletes competing.
The Maccabiah Games are open to Jewish athletes from around the World, as well as to all Israeli athletes regardless of religion. My Grandad was born in Israel during the British Mandate, his birthplace therefore allows me to play for Israel, which I have done in the European Leagues for the past three seasons.
The opportunity to compete in these Games is something I couldn’t turn down, which is why you won’t see me around the Harris & Ross clinics for the next week!
These Games are also a good chance to pick the brains and chat to some high level sporting Physiotherapists, 10,000 athletes converging to the Holy Land also brings a whole army of support staff!
With a couple of Games scheduled, let’s hope I bring back some silverware alongside a great experience and a killer tan!
It is an undeniable advantage to have a direct understanding of how injuries can be caused through contact sport. Tom understands the importance of Soft Tissue Therapy, how it can help with your performance and relax those muscles post event.
