Velosure Starley Primal up their game with Harris & Ross

Posted on February 27th, 2015

Doug JonesAs most middle aged men with two kids find themselves doing on a Saturday afternoon, I found myself shopping last year for a new time trial bike at Starley Bike’s flagship store in Altrincham, Manchester – who is also one of the three key sponsors for professional cycling team, Velosure Starley Primal.

Little did I know that this would start a brand new story for the High Performance Team at Harris & Ross Perform and end up with myself travelling to Spain and assessing Velosure Starley Primal’s current sports medical provision for their now well established team.

After talking to Starley’s Marketing Director, Nick Fountain, in store we decided to book all the Velosure Starley Primal professional riders in for our full Performance Screen. We are currently lucky enough to work with every type of two wheel athlete including world champion downhill mountain bike, Motorcross, World Superbike, Speedway, and enduro mountain bikers.

Our aim with any team or individual rider we work with is to increase their performance on the bike without causing injury and to address any imbalances in strength or range of motion that may predispose the rider to injury later on in the season. These guys are riding five hours a day six days a week so every individual % tweak in performance counts over the duration of a season. Sir Dave Brailsford coined the term “marginal gains” to describe this.

The screen that we performed between the sports lab at Spire Manchester Hospital and Performance centre at Wilmslow is a full medical including body fat composition, biomechanical video analysis of their position on the bike, force platform analysis of their single leg power and Isokinetic strength measurements of the torque they can produce at their knee. The screen has been developed over ten years of working with pro athletes in action sports and Rugby at the Rugby Football Union, London Wasps, Sale Sharks and Red Bull.

image8The data we have collected is now helping us to shape a specific performance plan for each rider and travelling to Spain was the next stage of this performance plan. Because of the number of hours they spend in the saddle, the Team Directors at Velosure Starley Primal Pro Cycling team are really concerned about how their prize assets recover and look after their body’s during such an intense time of training.

My visit to their training camp in Spain was a real eye opener to professional road cycling and I’m sure we can make a huge difference to the team’s performance this year by putting some key recovery strategies in place. I found the riders really open to trying anything new that could help them and as a team I introduced them to water based therapy, yoga, and compression garments post training. Coming from a Rugby background it was surprising to me that the riders’ immune function isn’t measured and nor is their calorific intake Vs expenditure or daily wellness monitored.

The High Performance Team at Harris & Ross are really excited about working with the team this year and will support them at key races and medically manage their riders at Spire Manchester Hospital and our performance centre in the event of a serious injury. We look forward to charting their progress and successes this year

They will be competing at the following national events this year: British Cycling Elite National Road Series, British Cycling Elite National Circuit Series, British Cycling Women’s Road Series and the Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

If you are interested in a performance screen by our High Performance Team please ring our office on 0161 832 9000 or email and ask to speak to myself, Doug Jones, and together we can discuss your requirements. The full performance screen for a professional rider costs £500 but you may be interested in a performance medical or isolated strength test in our lab.

Velosure Starley Primal sponsor, Starley Bikes also does a professional bike fit which will also help your efficiency on the bike and they can be contacted by ringing  0161 929 1929 or emailing and asking to speak to Nick Fountain.
