This January, our patient of the month is Graham Bewley! Graham has been using our services due to a history of back spasms. Find out more about his journey here-
Over the past 5-6 years I have had back spasms. They seemed to happen approximately once a year and it has cost me anything from a couple of days off work to full weeks at a time. One occurrence was while travelling abroad, which almost ruined a holiday.
The spasms were on the left side, lower back, the pain was excruciating, with the medication from the doctor and simple exercises they gave me offering no relief at all. When the spasms occurred I would be unable to stand up straight and only over time, usually a few days, the spasm would cease and I could then stand/walk normally again. Even after the spasm had passed, I would continue to have pain in the lower back that was extremely uncomfortable and could go on for months. That area of my back would also ache when engaging in my favourite hobby of mountain biking, meaning that I would not be able to spend as long in the saddle or push myself as I wanted.
Most recently it happened in August this year, where I was off work for almost a week. I decided that enough was enough. Through occupational health at work I was able to get an appointment to see Jo initially and then Sophie, the two Harris & Ross Physios working here. The first session was a complete eye-opener in terms of how we get into bad habits with our movement and exercising and how all the different muscle groups’ work. My physio sessions continued with Sophie as well as joining the back class that she ran every week. In the class, we went through circuits of various stretches and mat exercises to build the glutes and core strength, including resistance band training and also dead lifts. The classes, coupled with the exercises and stretches that formed part of the homework from the treatment sessions, have made my back feel much better and I am feeling physically better as a result. It also gave me the motivation to re-join a gym and continue with improving my fitness and core strength.
I would recommend anybody to see a physiotherapist, as I have mentioned it is truly an eye opener. Based on the professionalism, dedication and enthusiasm of Sophie I would certainly recommend Harris & Ross in the future.
Well done to Graham on winning and a £100 Harris & Ross treatment voucher is winging its way to you!
