Robin Johnson is our current ‘Patient of the month’ here at Harris & Ross…. read on for his story….
Recently retired, I used to be a keen cyclist and I was involved in a major accident on October 10th 2018. I was cycling to a cafe near Mobberley when a car drove over me from a side road and dragged me along the road. It knocked me out and I was badly crushed, but my head was intact (thank goodness for my helmet) and my ribs had protected my internal organs….. but it was a close thing as I broke all but one! An Air ambulance brought a doctor to me and he performed some small operations on the roadside and put me out before whisking me to Salford Royal in an ambulance. There I underwent several major operations in the first three days – fixing many of my ribs, putting two metal fixations in my back and re-constructing my right hip socket. I was then confined to bed for 7 weeks, in order for my spinal fluid to stop leaking before they performed further surgery on my lower back to provide a large and more robust fixation. The point is, I was a complex problem, and when I left hospital after 9 weeks I could barely walk with crutches.
I received hydrotherapy and neuro physiotherapy for about 12 weeks and that got me to the point of being able to walk with one crutch. However, I had lost a lot of muscle mass while lying on my back in hospital and subsequent inactivity and all my joints were incredibly stiff. In April I was referred to Katie Farrimond at Harris & Ross for sports massage to try and loosen me up. I spoke to her first as I was quite wary about anybody touching me. I was re-assured that although she was doing sports massage she was trained in Sports Rehabilitation.
I didn’t need to worry. From our first appointment where she took down my history, she was supremely confident and understood what I needed, even though my body was a mass of scars and my muscles were in a very bad way. After one session I could tell she had made a massive difference and over the next few weeks I gradually started to loosen up all over. As I have improved, she has concentrated on the areas that needed attention, although I wish we had never discussed working on the underneath of right foot which stays locked in a splint. It is incredibly stiff and it is amazingly painful when she works on it but she knows how far to push me – enough to sweat and moan but not enough to ask her to stop.
I am now walking without a stick, but still can’t bend or twist, and a splint is needed to stabilise my ankle and foot where I have lost nervous control. Its likely I’ll need sports massages for a long while yet but I’ve now found another reason to see Katie. As I have become more active it has become apparent how much muscle I have lost and she has been able to provide me with an exercise programme to build up my lower limb strength and help me to regain some of the control I need to walk smoothly. Its been hard work but it is starting to pay dividends as I feel much stronger and more stable when I am walking.
Harris and Ross have been very efficient and friendly – Katie has been excellent in both her treatment of a broken Robin and her relaxed and chatty style. I’m really very pleased I found somebody like her to take me on.
Well done Robin on winning our Patient of the Month- a £100 treatment voucher is winging it’s way to you!
