Congratulations to Rachel Atherton, who’s just reclaimed the elite women’s downhill title at the mountain bike World Championships in South Africa.
The 25-year-old has been working with Harris & Ross’ Doug Jones since 2006, mainly to get her strength up – or as Doug describes it: “making her fit to crash!”.
In this sport, broken bones are a given and Rachel’s had operations on both shoulders, so the physiotherapy work has mainly been about working on her core strength and shoulder and neck stability.
“As crashing is part of her job, we wanted to make her bounce and to do that she need to be very strong and learn how to fall safely. She said she wanted to be like the rugby players I treat – but not look like one!” added Doug.
She first won the title in 2008 and tweeted after the event this month:
“Hasn’t sunk in that I’m finally world champion again. All I can say is THANK YOU to everyone in the whole world.”
