This July our Patient of the Month is Rhys Jones, who has been a Harris & Ross patient for many years. Rhys has a busy life- juggling being MD of recruitment start up and investment business – Davidson Gray, with pursuing his challenges outside of work. He needed Harris & Ross support as he trained for the notoriously difficult challenge of the ROC in Abersoch . This 114k race starting on Abersoch beach heads up to the summit of Snowdon and back in the most breath takingly scenic course the UK has to offer!
Rhys said, ‘ I signed up to the ROC event to raise as much money as I could honouring the memory of my nephew Edward, who sadly passed away at just 3 days old. My sister and her husband wanted to create a lasting legacy from his short life and support the charity- Forget Me Not- which delivers outstanding care to children with life shortening conditions and their families. I’d not ran in 8 months after advice from my surgeon on an ongoing back issue, so with the length of time off and having to work around my injury, training was a challenge in itself. However, I wanted to take on the hardest event I could to earn as many donations as possible.’
Consultant physiotherapist Dave Williams treated Rhys in the build up to the event and did everything he could to ensure Rhys was able to fulfill his aim, including giving him a well timed pep talk when he was at a low ebb.
We were delighted to follow up with Rhys after the event and hear the following:
‘Smashed it, even managed to come 26th out of 71 and 15th fastest up Snowdon!! Lost a bit of time coming down Snowdon, as I was trying not to take any silly risks with my back, but it felt fine, apart from achey, on the descent. It’s a bit stiff now, but trust me my quads are a million times worse, running down Snowdon smashed them to bits! Thanks so much for everything you did for me. Thanks too for the chat on the Friday before- it was the turning point in ensuring that I did the race- it was priceless. Please pass on my thanks to physio Becky too.’
Rhys managed to raise £1,200 for his sister’s charity and this has now increased to over £2,000! If you would like to show your support for Rhys and his family’s wonderful cause, please head to the Just Giving page which can be found here.
Well done to Rhys on winning and Harris & Ross pledge £100 to Forget Me Not for sharing the story!
