Podiatry is the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving the foot, ankle and lower extremities of the body. Understanding biomechanics can be vital to preventing pain and dysfunction within the body. Anything related to the foot and ankle needs to be assessed from a biomechanical perspective to understand the cause of discomfort. Given the importance of the foot to movement and function all over the body, Podiatry is integral to our overall health and wellbeing. This is why podiatry, biomechanics (Gait Analysis and Optogait) and chiropody are a central part of the Harris & Ross physiotherapy and rehabilitation service.
Orthotics alter the forces that go through the foot to help offload structures that might be under stress and causing pain.
Orthotics work – but you need to get the prescription right – just like with glasses! The wrong prescription could make things worse.
Our Custom made orthotics are sent off to a lab to be made totally bespoke to you.
We can also do Semi-bespoke orthotics – our Podiatrist can make some basic amendments to off the shelf versions.
How do we take the measurements for custom orthotics?
We use an I-pad based 3D scanner which only takes a couple of minutes.
The scan and measurements get sent to the lab where the orthotics are 3D printed; which reduces waste and so is more environmentally friendly.
What’s an example of a type of condition that an orthotic can help?
Plantar fascia: the normal thickness of a healthy plantar fascia is 2-4mm. We can measure your plantar fascia with an ultrasound scan and often they are darker, thicker and full of fluid. With this diagnosis, we can then offer treatment with strength work, and use orthotics to cushion the heel and correct and support the arch of the foot. We effectively brace the foot to reduce the tensile stress.
