I always look forward to taking Hydrotherapy, not only for the appeal of the warm pool, but because I have fun with my patients! Sessions are tailored to each patient, and I aim to provide a varied session week to week, mixing up the exercises/routines from my ‘bag of tricks’. My patients seem to enjoy it as they keep coming back for more and I’m delighted to be busier than ever!
Call me biased, but I think the word should be spread about hydrotherapy and its benefits for patients. I get enjoyment from seeing patients progress, a most recent example is of a patient post hip surgery who started off learning to walk without crutches, to completing a fitness circuit in the pool, in just 6 weeks! This is half the time it would take to reach this stage on land!
As a physio for the High Performance team, I have also managed to convince the extreme sports athletes that this hydrotherapy lark is pretty great! The motor-cross riders, snow boarders and downhill mountain bikers are loving the freedom they have in the pool. Believe me when I say, getting these guys (and girls) to work in a safe environment is hard work! The reason they are here is because they don’t like working within ‘normal’ boundaries and safety.
So if the sound of hydrotherapy intrigues you, come along and try it. It is highly likely that I will join in (I can’t help myself!). If come the end of your treatment, we have built your confidence/improved quality of life AND we have had fun in the process, then what more can I ask for in terms of job satisfaction!
